As a Chicago newborn photographer, one of my favorite parts to do is design beautiful and simple studio sessions. Even if we’re in your home, I make sure that the focus is on the love between your family, and of course your precious little one.
Using props with newborns in a studio setting can be a lot for them, and sometimes they take away from the magic of your child. Now, that’s not to say I don’t see the beauty in prop-filled sessions! I also love to use little accessories like hair bows to accentuate moments, or use a family heirloom in an image with your little one to show its significance.
All in all, I make the focus of my work to be minimal and powerful in its raw authenticity. I want to capture all the tiny moments that would otherwise go unnoticed or even forgotten. Stretching their fingers and toes; smiling sleepily; looking up at you with wonder– all of these are magical moments that reveal themselves as the session progresses. It’s truly amazing what memories we create in such small amounts of time.
Simplicity also doesn’t have to mean plain, or without creativity. To me, it’s finding perfection in chaotic moments or ones that aren’t staged. That’s another reason I opt for more of an authentic nature to my work: poses aren’t always better than genuine interactions. Gentle guidance and direction is always offered to ease any camera shyness, but I want all families to feel like their true selves in front of my lens.
