Finding Peace In Daily Chaos | Chicagoland Photographer

As a mother and a Chicagoland photographer, I know that sometimes our lives seem to be too hectic to tell one day from the next. Among all mad dashes, early mornings and late nights, there’s little time to find stillness for yourself. To say motherhood is overwhelming feels like the biggest understatement, but I wanted to talk a bit today about something that’s been on my mind. The best way to find stillness and yes, even peace, is to lean into all the chaos and commotion. Just like the book “We’re Going On A Bear Hunt” that I’m sure so many of us read to our children, the only way forward is to move through the mess.

Leaning In

This is a strategy I tell so many mothers when we’re getting ready for our session, but it really is a mantra to get you through your life. On those days where you’re so tired that no amount of caffeine can revive you, and when your kids are just on another page, those are the times to just lean in. What I mean by this is to slow down and take a breath, take a moment. Look around at the scene in front of you, whatever that may be.

Your son could be painting the dog and your daughter could be spilling oatmeal on the floor! But, look at the amazing little people you’ve created. They’re curious and funny and mischievous and loud, and the love you have for them is unwavering. In every mistake they make, in every boundary they push, there’s a lesson to be taught. You can take a moment that may otherwise be terrible, and just find joy no matter what. Get through the moment together, and then laugh about the memory later (much, much later).

To use this strategy for our sessions together, I encourage mothers not to worry about every little movement. I am going to capture all the best, most beautiful moments of your family that you maybe didn’t even notice despite you living it! I know you want your children to be on their best behavior, but sometimes that’s just not going to happen, and that’s okay. We can work together and move forward seamlessly, letting their imagination run free and letting them guide the next few frames. It’s all about balance, in motherhood and photography! It’s never going to be exactly how you imagine it, but it’s going to be so beautiful all the same.

You’ve Got This

So, when your son is painting the dog, and that oatmeal is hardening on the tile by the second, take a breath. Lean into the moment, as crazy it may be, and exist in the present with your little ones. I know it takes so much strength, but if there’s anything each and every mother is capable of, it’s being strong. Please reach out if you need any support– I am here for you, both as your Chicagoland photographer and as a mother.
