Maternity sessions are among my favorites to shoot. Capturing the beauty and curves of a woman’s changing body as she becomes a mother is so important. Our bodies can be celebrated and remembered in intimate photography like this. I love to focus on parts of the body that should make women feel confident and powerful, like the new swell of her belly, a fullness brimming with life.
The studio was filled with music as sunlight poured in through the windows, washing everything in an ethereal glow. Mom to-be had her three-year-old son waiting for her at home, reminding her of how quickly time passes, and how precious it is to remember these beautiful moments our lives gift us with. It was a day spent reflecting on a time fleeting fast.
This session was done near Santa Barbara, California during a workshop. I was invited to join a group of amazing photographers and learn from an inspiration of mine, artist Elizabeth Messina. The entire experience was an absolute honor and a moment of my life I will cherish forever.
Typically, maternity sessions take place around 32 weeks; however, I always tell clients I will do their session whenever they feel comfortable. This session is a great example of how to embrace and celebrate the early months of pregnancy in an intimate way. The belly here is still prominent enough to encapsulate the gravity of a mothers’ new journey into pregnancy.
