Foods to avoid while breastfeeding before your newborn session

Congratulations, you did it. You went nine months without your favorite sushi dinner and all the other delicious things they recommended you not eat while pregnant.

Before you pick up that giant latte the size only dreams are made of. There’s a few more foods to avoid while breastfeeding.

These foods may cause an irritable, sleepless baby under 6 weeks. According to, cutting back on these foods can also keep your milk production levels up.

Every single baby is unique in their own way. I suggest consulting your Pediatrician, Doula or Lactation consultant with any concerns.

Foods to avoid while breastfeeding

  1. Spicy Foods
  2. Gassy Foods – Beans, Brussel Sprouts, Asparagus, Onions, Cucumbers Cabbage, Broccoli and Cauliflower .
  3. Caffeine – Soda, Coffee, Tea, Wine and Beer.
  4. Citrus Acidic foods and drinks – All Berries, tomatoes and tomato products (including pizza -eek), Grapefruit, Oranges, Pineapple, Lemons.
  5. Chocolate (rarely affects babies).
  6. Peanuts or nuts of any kind.
  7. Cow’s milk – If you have a problem with dairy, proteins from cow’s milk present in your own milk can cause problems for your baby.
  8. Avoid foods you or your baby’s father are sensitive to.

So while experts suggest not to eliminate ALL these foods for the entirety of breastfeeding. I do suggest avoiding these foods while breastfeeding 24-48 hours before your session.

Keeping a bland diet and eating comfort food, such as bread, pasta, potatoes and whole grains are great for keeping your baby comfortable.

It is very important to understand that I believe in baby led newborn sessions, which means that I never force or deny a feeding. Newborns should be fed before the session starts, but if your baby is hungry, there is plenty of time to stop and feed them.
