As someone who has been working in Chicago newborn photography for years, I know that being able to relax is one of the most important aspects of any session. As a client and a new mama, you should be able to walk into any photographers’ studio and feel completely at ease. I always strive to create the most nurturing and tranquil atmosphere. With newborn sessions, that’s often the most important determining factor to a good session.
As a photographer working with nervous new moms, newborns and families, here’s a few things I do to ensure a relaxing studio session.
1. Keep A Calming Color Palette
Not only are neutral colors best for keeping photos timeless, but they create a soothing environment. You never want to walk into a space and feel overwhelmed by colors that are too loud. Picking related colors that flow is key for a calm space.
2. Having Lots of Natural Light
This is a must for any photo studio, but especially when you’re working with newborns. A soft light source won’t be too much for them, and it’ll add an ethereal feel to all of those precious newborn portraits. It’s also wonderful for photos that have a delicate feel to them.
3. Reassure, Reassure, Reassure
This is something I cannot stress enough! The thing I care about most is how comfortable the mamas are. Photographers should always make you feel like you can say anything to them– if you need to take a break, a breather, or a moment to touch up your styling, you are entitled to that. Your photos will reflect your mood, so you should be completely peaceful.
